A guide to student disability services and accommodations in school and the workplace.

Whether you’re heading into your first semester in college or starting a new job, having a disability or learning difference shouldn’t limit your success — but it does require knowing your rights and the resources available to you.

In College
Your first stop should be your school’s Disability Services Office (DSO). The office goes by different names at different schools, but every accredited college has one. They can help you document your needs and set up formal accommodations like extended test time, note-taking support, priority registration or alternative formats for course materials.

You are your own best advocate. Reach out to professors early — ideally before classes begin. You don’t need to disclose your specific diagnosis; you only need to communicate what you’re entitled to. If a professor is unresponsive or resistant, return to your DSO counselor, who can intervene on your behalf.

In the Workplace
All employers with 15 or more employees are required by law to provide reasonable accommodations unless doing so causes undue hardship. This often covers flexible scheduling, assistive technology, modified workspaces or permission to work remotely.

If you need accommodations, submit a written request to the human resources department or your direct manager. Be specific about what you need and how it relates to your job performance. Showing a clear connection between your needs and the accommodation strengthens your case.

When Needs Change
If your needs evolve, you have the right to request updated accommodations. Be sure to keep documentation of all conversations with Disability Services or Human Resources. Regularly reassessing your accommodations ensures they continue to work for you.
