Craft Your Future

What you need to know about training for a skilled trade.

Almost a million people move to Florida every single year and that’s great news for anyone who wants to work in skilled trades, which are often tied to the housing and travel sectors.

On average, skilled tradespeople in Florida earn about $45,000, according to recent data from TradeschoolDudes.com. The highest-paying fields are lineworkers, commercial truck drivers, AV technicians and elevator install and repair technicians, all of whom typically earn around $66,000 per year. However, many of these jobs offer a lot of overtime opportunities, and salaries can easily top $100,000 for reliable workers.

Many trades require either a two-year degree or on-the-job training (apprenticeships), which come at a much lower cost than a university degree. In addition, lots of companies are willing to pay for tuition and equipment for current or future employees, making it essentially free to learn a trade.

Job stability is also a selling point — Florida always needs more radiation therapists, HVAC technicians, plumbers and aircraft maintenance techs.

Trade schools generally cost 10-20% of what you’d pay for a university education, and many degrees and certificates can be completed in 6-24 months. The career outlooks are very rosy: most of these programs boast an 80-90% job placement rate and demand for skilled workers increases every year. (There are many things that AI can do, but Claude can’t fix your air conditioner!)

There is almost certainly a vocational or professional training school near you. In your search, be careful to choose only accredited schools and industry-recognized certifications and licenses. Read reviews and do your due diligence before enrolling.
