All About: Your Personal Brand
What is a “personal brand”?
When someone looks you up online — whether for a job, internship, scholarship or even a dating app — your digital footprint serves as a quick insight into who you are.
This footprint is known as a personal brand. It’s how you define yourself, your core values and what is important in your interactions with the world. It’s like if you took the concept of self-image up a notch, refining and codifying it for public consumption. Your brand is continuously built through every interaction, both in-person and online.
Traditionally, "branding" in business and marketing refers to making a product or company instantly recognizable through distinct features and values. For example, the Amazon logo features an arrow pointing from A to Z, suggesting that the company sells everything. And it’s no accident that the arrow resembles a smile!
Does everyone need a personal brand?
The short answer — Yes.
The reality is that, in our world, digital interactions shape perceptions. Personal branding has emerged as a vital tool for presenting yourself in career opportunities, academic admissions and even personal relationships.
Hiring managers rely on your brand to get to know how your values might align with corporate culture. For college hopefuls, personal branding is crucial for demonstrating that you’re a right fit for an institution and can significantly enhance your chances of acceptance. Further, a positive personal brand can dramatically increase your eligibility for scholarships by positioning you as a potential brand ambassador for the organization.
How do I start building a personal brand?
Start cultivating your brand as early as possible. Watch your posts on socials (make only your best stuff public), network with industry leaders and local movers and shakers.
Consider creating a LinkedIn profile, where you can create and share content that establishes your active interest in your desired field. Although LinkedIn is mostly work-related, your profile can also speak to causes that are near and dear to you.
If you’re into aesthetics, you can also use tools like Canva or Adobe Spark to create a consistent visual identity that showcases your skills.
What should my brand be?
Well, that’s up to you. Just keep it clear, consistent and authentic.
