The Freshman 15 Myth, Busted!
If you’re about to head off to college, you’ve probably heard some warnings about the “freshman 15” — the weight that most students gain in their first year on campus. Well, we have some good news: it’s not real. Mostly.
A study published in the Journal of American College Health found that only half of the freshmen surveyed gained any weight, and that the average was only 2 lbs. Over 30% experienced no change at all, and about 15% lost a little. Only 5% of students reported weight gain of 15 lbs or more.
The takeaway is that everything is in transition during freshman year, including your activity levels, eating habits, and daily routines. Think of any changes to your weight simply as one indicator of your overall physical and mental health. Extreme fluctuations in either direction could indicate that you need more support handling the changes that you’re facing, but a little wiggle in the numbers on the scale is no cause for concern.
So don’t waste time fearing the mythical “freshman 15.” Spend your energy establishing new, healthy routines and adjusting to your new life. And enjoy it!
