Is it Too Early for an Internship?

Starting an internship when you’ve just barely started high school might seem out of your reach. But if your have a good idea of the kind of career you’re interested in, starting early can give you a competitive edge. So how do you land an internship with no experience?

First, invest a little time in developing skills that will make you stand out to potential employers. You could take an online class, join a club, or sign up for an extracurricular that relates to your interest.
Then, start networking! Talk to everyone you know about your goals. Reach out to family friends, teachers, and local professionals in your desired industry. Stay positive, and be intentional about how you’re presenting yourself in person and online. If you haven’t already locked down your social media, this is the time.

Before you apply to anything, do your research. Search online for companies and nonprofit organizations that offer internships to high school students. Familiarize yourself with their websites, attend any career fairs they participate in, and follow them on social media.

Be sure to use templates or your design skills to create a polished resume. You don’t have to have a lot on it, but don’t be shy about highlighting your skills and enthusiasm. Always tailor your resume and email to each opportunity; nothing reeks of disinterest like a form letter!

You’ll need to be persistent and keep going in the face of rejection. Follow up with employers in a timely manner, thank them for their consideration, and keep at it. Determination and resilience will pay off in the end!
