Get it Together!

There’s A LOT to keep track of in high school: homework, upcoming projects, studying for tests, sports practices and games, club meetings, social outings and dates, chores, work schedules, family obligations, and more.

When something new comes up, it seems obvious that we will remember it later; after all, it’s important! But the brain is notoriously untrustworthy, and the more mental balls you try to juggle, the more you will drop.

Planners — Be open to the many options for planners — appointment books, bullet journals, blank notebooks and sketchbooks. Think about how your time is structured (by the week? the day? the hour?) and go from there.

Digital Planners — Robust apps like Evernote work across platforms and can do pretty much everything. You can even write an essay on your phone, add photos, save it to the cloud, then print it from a school computer!

Simple Apps — Use native phone apps like Calendar or Notes to track appointments, task lists, project steps, and due dates. Set reminders and alerts if you need a nudge every now and then.

DIY — Use materials you already have to cobble together a system that works. If you have a Google account, create a simple Form to input upcoming events and deadlines; link it to a color-coded Sheet; and share it with a parent, advisor, or bestie who can hold you accountable.
