Executive Functioning 101
“Executive functioning” is a big buzzword in the academic and professional worlds right now. But what does it mean, and why should you care?
Executive functioning: an umbrella term for several mental functions that require effort and concentration
Have you ever completely spaced on a big project until the day before it was due? Or forgotten where you left your phone charger? Or lost the pencil you were just holding? These are completely normal lapses in executive functioning.
But if you find that these kinds of things happen to you ALL THE TIME, you might benefit from executive functioning practice. There are professional EF coaches, but many of your teachers and learning specialists can also help you out. (And honestly, there are some great videos and resources online, too!)
Which executive functions are most challenging for you?
Cognitive flexibility: the ability to see from other perspectives, imagine multiple solutions, or adapt to changing circumstances
Working memory: short-term brain storage, where you keep the most important information about a task while you are completing that task
Inhibition: the ability to filter out distractions and resist temptations, including impulsive behaviors and irrational decisions
