Don’t Wait!

Sign up for these extracurriculars to start developing your cultural competency.

Like clubs and sports, extracurricular activities are perfect places to meet new people, practice teamwork, and learn more about yourself. They also help you look good on college and job applications!

Educate Yourself: Take the initiative to learn about different cultures, traditions, and customs. Join a book or film club; start a blog reviewing documentaries; work part-time at a local business in your area of career interest.

Step out of Your Comfort Zone: Challenge yourself to engage with people from diverse backgrounds. Volunteer at local cultural events; join multicultural clubs; or participate in exchange programs.

Practice Empathy: Listen actively, ask questions, and show genuine interest in learning about others. Volunteer at a free clinic or food bank; help out at a community garden; start a clothing closet, school supply bank, or tutoring center for your fellow students.

Be Open-minded: Approach cultural differences with an open mind and accept that there is no one “right” way of doing things. Encounter and appreciate alternative viewpoints through a debate club, Model UN, or student leadership group.

Reflect on Your Own Culture: Take the time to reflect on how your own cultural identity shapes your beliefs and behaviors. Write for the school newspaper; express yourself through a dance troupe, drama club, or local band; if you’re a visual artist, join the National Art Honor Society.
