Applications for fine arts programs, including dance and music performance, often require students to submit a portfolio of their work. Here’s how to do it.

1. Stick to the portfolio submission requirements.
If the program asks for six pieces, include exactly six. More is not better. If they ask for an artistic statement, it must be concise and painstakingly proofread.

2. Gather your materials.
For visual artists, such as illustrators or painters, include sketches as well as finished pieces. You can showcase your personal style but focus more on demonstrating foundational skills. For performing artists, such as dancers, singers or musicians, be sure to have clearly recorded audition materials, as well as process documents, like studies and storyboards.

3. Document and label clearly.
Be sure to use the file formats and naming conventions required by the school. If they want it all to be collated into one PDF, be sure to do so. Some schools use their own secure sites for uploading work.

4. Schedule portfolio reviews.
Many schools offer pre-application reviews where you can get help choosing pieces. Reviewers can also suggest inclusions and answer questions about formatting. Definitely take advantage of this service if available!

What if you don’t have enough work to submit? It’s not too late to create it now. Sketching from observation is the most important skill for any visual arts major and you can do that from your couch with a pencil and a notebook.
