Game On!
What video games can teach you about life.
About 30% of the way into a video game, everything gets a lot harder. Enemies are stronger. Puzzles are more complicated. Jumps are higher and falls farther. It takes longer to level up and tools and resources become scarce. This is when you really test your mettle as a player: The tutorial is over and the game sets you free to see what you can do without a well-timed power-up.
Typically, it’s also when you die, probably more than once.
But each time you hit “Continue,” you learn something new: Maybe you didn’t see that little ledge to the left. Maybe you need to play defense rather than offense. Maybe you need to collect more gold so you can upgrade your weapons. Maybe you read a walkthrough. Maybe you rage quit and come back days later. Eventually, you make it and the game continues. Now, you’re stronger and smarter than you ever were, ready to take on even tougher challenges.
According to some theorists, this is also how life works — or rather, how life should work. It makes sense, right? We also start out at Level 0: No money, no skills, no abilities, no experience. And the only way we can earn most of these things is by playing the game. In other words — by living. Too bad we can’t respawn, although we do generally get do-overs when we make mistakes.
Dr. Ian Bogost, a game designer and expert on game studies, says that playing games teaches us how to understand systems, especially political and economic systems, which are normally unwelcoming in their complexity. Essentially, we are learning how to be adults and citizens in the modern world by playing games — intuiting the rules and contours of the system, learning to adhere to or depart from its values and finding our place within its landscape.
In some ways, video games mimic our transition from adolescence into adulthood. They also introduce us to a capitalist system of infinite questing for more. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a prime example of this system, with its cycle of debt, sales and income. But there are some much more lighthearted — but no less important — lessons that we can take from the core mechanics of game design.
1. Finding loot. In games, loot isn’t randomly placed; it’s tucked into side rooms, dropped by enemies and hidden behind puzzles. In life, loot is opportunities: a scholarship, a mentor, a chance conversation, a skill you pick up almost by accident. The lesson isn’t to wait for good stuff to appear, it’s to actively explore, because the game rewards curiosity. If you join clubs, ask questions and poke around outside your comfort zone, you may find more loot than your friends who stay on the main path.
2. Gaining XP. Low-level grinding, or practice, is what makes you strong enough for later challenges. If you reframe homework, practice or a boring job as XP farming for a future boss fight, you might stick with it longer than someone who sees it as pointless busywork.
3. Exploring the map. Good open-world games reward exploring before committing to one path. You find gear, allies and knowledge that make later choices easier. IRL? Trying different subjects, hobbies, jobs and social circles in high school isn’t wasted time — it’s map revealing. You can’t optimize a route you haven’t scouted.
4. Beating bosses. Boss fights feel impossible until you realize all bosses have a pattern. Big real-life challenges such as a hard class, a college application or a tough relationship, feel the same way. The game-design move is to study the boss first — what’s actually being tested, what’s the failure pattern, where’s the opening — instead of just mashing buttons.
5. Winning at life. This is the part games can’t fully teach and it’s the most important one: Someone else designed the game’s win condition, but nobody designs yours. The real skill is figuring out what winning means to you. This requires reflection, not just leveling stats. If you just borrow someone else’s definition of winning (i.e., the college your parents want you to attend, the grades your friends are getting, the followers your nemesis has), you can end up beating the game and still feel empty. Only you can make your life meaningful.
This isn’t all to say that you should play video games all day, every day! Too much of anything can be your downfall. Just keep in mind that the logic of video games is often the logic of life and maybe remembering that will help you when you inevitably struggle or outright fail. After all, the best games aren’t fun because they let you win easily; they’re fun because they make struggle legible. You can always see how far you’ve come, what leveled you up and what to try next. Real life rarely hands you that clarity for free. Maybe the most useful habit to borrow from games isn’t the points or the badges, but the willingness to look at a setback and ask the question every good player asks automatically: What did that teach me, and what do I try next?
In-Game IRL: Core Game Concepts and Their Real-World Equivalents
Boss fight → Major, high-stakes life event, like a health crisis or the bar exam
Character creator → Building your identity or personal brand / your traits or “stats”
Crafting → Combining raw resources (knowledge, contacts, materials) into something more valuable than the sum of its parts
Difficulty curve → Life’s challenges generally scale to your growth and capability, and what it feels like when they don’t
Easter eggs → Hidden rewards for curiosity, aka, the unexpected value in reading deeply, exploring, or asking one more question
Grinding → Repetitive, unglamorous practice that builds mastery
Guild → Your close collaborators or support network
Health/mana bar → Physical and emotional energy; must be replenished regularly
Loot drops → Unexpected windfalls like a lucky referral or perfect job opening
Main quest/story arc → Your overarching life goal or purpose, develops as you go
New game+ → A career pivot, second degree, or move to a new city: start over but keep everything learned so far
NPC → A person (such as a mentor or friendly stranger) who dispenses exactly the information or help you need at a pivotal moment
Resource management → Strategic decisions forced by scarcity (i.e., budgeting)
Save point → A “third place” or recharge spot, like a favorite park or BFF’s house
Side quests → Hobbies and detours that often turn out to matter more than you’d thought
Skill tree → Deliberate choices about which skills and interests to develop (and to ignore)
XP (experience points) → Skills and expertise accumulated through repeated practice

Here’s how you do it.
Senior Year
Practice modding games like Minecraft, take any art classes your school offers, start posting art/mods publicly (ArtStation, itch.io), do 1-2 game jams a year (Ludum Dare, GMTK Jam — they’re free).
Undergrad
UCF’s Computer Science BS is the most common feeder pathway into FIEA’s programming/technical track, but there’s also a straight Digital Media/Game Design track if you want to stay art-first.
Grad School
FIEA is a 16-month, 4-semester master’s where you help build a full published game with a 15-20 person student team — basically a simulated studio experience, with an average starting salary of $83,000 for grads.
Entry Point
EA Tiburon, Iron Galaxy (Orlando), or an indie studio; indies are often the faster first job and great for building a demo reel before aiming at a major, and we had almost 30 of them at last count.
