How to Talk to Your Professors

I’m having trouble in a class. What should I do?

It’s best to go directly to your professor, either in person during office hours or over email. Keep any emails brief and professional.

I’m scared they’ll think I’m dumb.
Promise they won’t. Teachers really respect students who can advocate for themselves and admit when they are struggling or need more support. Remember, your job is literally to Not Know Things. That’s why you’re in school!

What if I’m failing the class?
Ask the professor if you can get an extension on the final paper, turn in late work for partial credit, or share what you’ve learned verbally.

Should I ask for extra credit?
Most professors don’t love this question from students who haven’t done the assigned work. Instead, be candid about why you’re in this pickle, and offer solutions like those mentioned above. If they are willing to offer extra credit, they’ll bring it up at that point.

What if I think a class policy or grade is unfair?
Again, speak directly to the professor. Be respectful, and express your concerns with evidence and objectivity — not accusations or hostility. Seek first to understand their rationale, and perhaps they’ll do the same for you.
