Bills, Bills, Bills!
Okay, so paying bills is maybe not the greatest part of adulting. But it’s a necessary evil, and if you remember a few simple things, it can be more manageable and less stressful.
No. 1 • USE AUTOPAY
Most banks and creditors offer autopay options that are great for fixed expenses, like rent and minimum monthly payments. Once they’re set up, add calendar reminders to your phone so that they never take you by surprise.
Pro tip
If you have an outstanding balance on a loan or credit card, set up autopay for the minimum, but log in directly to pay extra whenever you can. You’ll pay it down faster with way less interest.
No. 2 • PAPER OR DIGITAL?
Lots of places give you the option to choose paper statements mailed to your home or digital ones via email. Either way, set up a filing system so that the bill is in your face (on your fridge, in your inbox, taped to your mirror) until it’s been paid.
No. 3 • ASK FOR HELP
It’s really scary to fall behind on your bills or know that you’ll be short on the due date. The best thing you can do is reach out to whomever you owe and let them know what’s going on. Ask to set up a payment plan, skip a month, or anything else they can do for you. At the end of the day, most people just want to get paid, so they’re often willing to work with you on making that happen.
