Teacher Transcript

  1. Teacher: Read the NEXT article, “The Taste of Immokalee is Proof Positive”. What are some of the first questions that come to mind after reading the article? Take time to allow for questions and discussion
  2. Teacher: Let’s focus on internships. According to the article, 204 students were paid interns. Why do you think internships are important? Have you ever considered researching the availability of local internships?
  3. Teacher: The activity for this article will be to research businesses located in Florida and find out if internships are available.
  4. Teacher: First using the internet find out what internships are all about – what is the advantage of an internship? Are all internships paid positions? Should you take an internship position if you will not be getting paid? Should you look for an internship in the career area of your desired profession? (Post these questions on the board.)
  5. Teacher: Divide students into pairs. Working with a partner, find two companies in Florida that offer internships. (The companies can be local or can be throughout the state of Florida. For example, Arthrex in Naples, FL.) Determine if they are paid positions or not. Research the work expectation of the interns. Do the interns receive college scholarship money?
  6. Teacher: Create a posterboard with the information gathered from the two companies. Be creative and unique in your posterboard design. Consider that the posters may be displayed in the Guidance department of your school. (HINT: include the name of the company, location, type of business, and explanation of internship program. You may have to call the HR department in some cases to get this information.)
