SS.912.FL.4.4: Describe why people often make a cash payment to the seller of a good—called a down payment—in order to reduce the amount, they need to borrow. Describe why lenders may consider loans made with a down payment to have less risk because the down payment gives the borrower some equity or ownership right away and why these loans may carry a lower interest rate.

Teacher Transcript

  1. Teacher: Please take a minute to read the NEXT article, “Money Moves”. There are a more than a few financial terms used in this article that you might not be familiar with right now. There are many more financial terms and phrases that you should become familiar with as you move into your post-secondary education or job after graduation.
  2. Teacher: Divide the class so that the students are working with a partner. Post the instructions below on the board for students to view as they work.
  3. Teacher: While students are working pass out to each group a peer assessment form and ask each group to assess at least one other game. (See the peer assessment form below and print one copy per group.)
  4. Teacher: When students have completed their task allow them time to visit the other games created by their peers.

Instructions

  1. Gather all the financial terms in the article and add at least 5 additional terms. Look for these terms on the internet.
  2. Brainstorm with your partner about the type of game to create specifically geared towards middle school students.
  3. Organize the supplies you will need and begin putting together the game. (HINT: Make it fun! Make it colorful! Make it exciting!)
