Introduction
Standing out from the crowd is an essential consideration of the college admission process. As the NEXT article, “Be Pointy!” says, “To stand out, you have to do something different: be yourself.” But what exactly does this statement mean?
Task
Take a few minutes to answer these questions:
- What are the things you do in life that make you stand out from your peers?
- Do you have something that you are passionate about?
- Have you worked to fulfill that passion in your daily life? In what respects?
- Are you the type of person who takes initiative and is encouraging to others? Example
- Do you seek help and ask questions not just from your peers but from people of all ages? What does a ‘yes’ answer to this question tell you about yourself?
- What does your body language say about you? Research positive body language.
- Are routine good manners important to you? Do you say ‘please’, ‘thank you’ ‘pardon me’? Why is this important?
Accumulate your answers to these questions. How would you represent these to a college admission officer in written format? Write a creative essay that speaks to the elements above and the fact that you ARE a standout among your peers.
Prove to the college of your choice that you are in fact “pointy!”
